How do I take a number plate off a car?

You wish to take your personalised number plate off your car but unsure how to. The team here at Discount Registrations are on hand to explain how. There may be a reason you wish to take it off, you may wish to keep the number to use later or to assign to another vehicle
The number plate will be removed immediately if your vehicle doesn’t require an inspection. You will need to send the following information to DVLA:
What documents do I need to send to take a number plate off a car?
A V317 form
The vehicle’s V5C new keeper slip, this is the green section. And a completed V62
The £80 transfer fee. This can be done online or by post. The advantage of doing this process online is that the number plate will be removed immediately if your vehicle does not need an inspection.
You can assign the number to another vehicle as soon as you’ve applied to take it off - use the reference number you get after you apply. Once this process is complete via post or online, then You’ll be sent:
A new logbook (V5C) showing the vehicle’s replacement registration number - it can take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive
A V778 retention document if the private number is in your name
If the private number is in someone else’s name, the V778 document will be sent to them.
It is important to note that before you can drive your vehicle, you must:
Put the original or new number plates on the vehicle before you drive it
Tell your insurance company your new registration number
Tell your insurance company about your new registration number
